How Much Does an Arborist Report Cost in Brisbane?
In Brisbane, a consulting arborist charges from $660 including GST for a standard single-tree report supporting a council application, delivered in 2-3 business days. An arboricultural impact assessment for a development application starts higher because the scope is larger. Every figure on this page is a genuine starting price, and every job is quoted at a fixed fee before any work begins.

Cost drivers
Why Level 5 arborist report costs vary
Cost varies because scope varies, not because the hourly rate moves. Three things account for most of the gap between a starting price and a final quote: how many trees need assessing, what the report has to prove, and how much work each individual tree takes to assess properly.
Number of trees
The first tree carries the site visit. Additional trees are incremental, so a five-tree assessment costs considerably less than five single assessments.
What the report must answer
A health and condition report is simpler than one that must respond to a development application, calculate protection zones against architectural drawings, and justify encroachments.
Tree complexity
A young street tree in open ground is a quick assessment. A mature fig or large gum with a wide canopy over a structure is not — and a tree needing root collar excavation or instrument-based decay detection to reach a defensible conclusion takes longer again.
Whoever you hire
Questions worth asking before you commit
Four questions that sort a consultant who has done this before from one who has not. They apply to this practice as much as to anyone else you call.
-
01
Is a report actually required for my situation?
A straight answer here tells you a lot about who you are dealing with.
-
02
Is this a fixed price, and what is included?
Get the tree count and the deliverable in writing.
-
03
Who writes it, and what is their qualification?
It should be an AQF Level 5 arborist, named on the report.
-
04
What happens if council comes back with an information request?
Some include a response; some invoice again.
Before you pay
What you should not be paying for
A report you don't need
This is the big one. Not every council application requires an arborist report. In Brisbane you definitely need one for a significant landscape tree, and you need an impact assessment where construction affects a root zone. For plenty of other applications a report is optional.
If someone quotes you for a report before establishing whether your tree is even protected, that is a signal. Run a free Protected Vegetation Enquiry with Brisbane City Council first.
A travel fee inside Brisbane
No travel fee should apply anywhere in the Brisbane City Council area — it is a compact local government area and the travel is part of doing business in it. Further out, a travel component is more defensible over genuinely long distances, but ask whether jobs get grouped by area first. Most consultants can avoid the charge entirely by scheduling sensibly.
The permit itself
Brisbane City Council does not charge for protected vegetation permit applications. If an invoice includes a council application fee for a Brisbane permit, ask what it is for. This is council-specific — some South East Queensland councils do charge to lodge, so check the rules for the council you are actually in.
An impact assessment when a condition report would do
An impact assessment is roughly double the cost of a standard report. It is the right instrument when construction encroaches on a protected root zone. It is not the right instrument for "my tree looks sick and I want to remove it".
Arborist report pricing questions
How much does a Level 5 arborist report cost?
A standard single-tree report by an AQF Level 5 arborist starts at $660 including GST, delivered in 2-3 business days. The Brisbane market broadly sits between $400 and $800 for that work. Level 5 is the qualification councils across South East Queensland specify on vegetation reports, so it is not an upgrade you are paying extra for — it is the baseline the report has to meet to be accepted at all.
Why do you publish prices when most arborists don’t?
Because hiding them wastes everyone’s time, and because a vague quote is easier to inflate once someone is already invested in the conversation. Most people looking for an arborist report want to know whether it is a $400 problem or a $4,000 problem before they pick up the phone. Publishing a genuine starting figure means the enquiries that arrive are from people who already know the range and are comfortable with it.
Why do quotes vary so much between arborists?
Partly scope and partly transparency. A quote covering one tree and a single site visit is not comparable to one covering five trees, survey work and a response to an information request. The larger factor is that most arborists will not publish a figure at all, so there is nothing to measure a quote against until you are already several conversations deep. Anything materially below $400 deserves a question about what is actually being delivered; anything well above $800 for one straightforward tree deserves a question about scope.
Is the "from" price what I’ll actually pay?
For a straightforward job, yes. The starting figure covers a standard scope — typically one site visit and a small number of trees. Cost increases with tree numbers, tree complexity, acreage, and whether the report has to address a development application. The calculator above is an estimate rather than a quote, because it cannot see your site, but it runs on these same published prices and the same scope factors used when quoting properly. Either way you get a fixed quote in writing before any work starts, and that figure is what you pay.
What if council refuses the application anyway?
You still hold the report, and it is still the document you need. A refusal is a decision about the application, not a fault in the assessment — the same report is what you use to answer an information request, revise what you are proposing, or reapply, and none of those need a second assessment commissioned from scratch. Follow-up questions on a report from here are answered without another invoice. The more expensive path is the other one: applying with no supporting evidence, being refused for that reason, and paying for the assessment afterwards regardless.
Do you charge for a quote?
No. Quoting is free and there is no obligation. If a phone conversation establishes that you don’t need a report at all, that conversation is also free.
Do you charge a travel fee?
Travel is free to any suburb in Brisbane. For jobs considerably further out a travel fee may apply, though we do our best to avoid it and to keep it to a minimum — jobs in the same area get grouped onto the same day wherever possible. Where a travel fee does apply it is in your quote up front, never added afterwards.
Can I get it faster?
Standard turnaround is 2–3 business days from the site visit. Where a deadline is tighter, a rush turnaround of around 48 hours is often possible for an additional fee. Tell us your deadline when you enquire and you will get a straight answer on whether it is achievable.
How do I pay?
Invoiced on delivery of the report for residential work, with standard commercial terms available for builders, developers and managed properties.
